Shincheonji Church Case
South Korea has recorded one of the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. The focus is on the role of a cult in Daegu, accused of spreading the virus.
COVID-19 Case in South Korea
South Korea has recorded the 3rd highest number of COVID-19 cases outside China. This is after Italy and Iran. There are roughly 8,000 cases in the Asian country. More than 66 deaths due to the disease have been recorded in South Korea. Most of the cases are from the city of Daegu.
Patient 31
Patient 31 is the codename given to a super-spreader of the COVID-19 in South Korea. She is a 61 year old woman who had no recent history of travelling abroad. She had refused to get tested for the virus despite presenting several of the symptoms. She is said to have infected over 1,000 people by visiting church services and a public buffet.
Shincheonji Church
The patient 31 is linked to a cult following called Shincheonji Church of Jesus. It is a mysterious cult founded by Lee Man-hee in 1984. It has more than 120,000 followers. The church is being criticised for its tightly packed conditions and lack of transparency.
