The Russian President, Putin, said that the proposed amendment that would allow him to run for presidency for another term would be possible if the Constitutional Court allows it.
Russian President
The Russian President is the highest office in the Russian state. He is the head of the state, de jure head of the government and also the commander in chief of the armed forces of Russia. The current President is Vladimir Putin.
Election to the Post
The President of Russia is elected directly by popular vote. The term of office is 6 years. Only a citizen of Russia who is at least 35 years old is eligible for the post. He or she must have been permanently resided in the country for at least 10 years. No more than 2 consecutive terms can be served by an individual. An individual can stand for re-election after sitting out for one term, in case he/ she had served 2 consecutive terms before.
The Proposed Amendments
The amendments were proposed by lawmaker Valentina Tereshkova- known for her being the first woman to fly in space. The amendment proposes scrapping the rule that prevents individuals from serving more than 2 consecutive terms as president. Another alternative proposed is stopping the clock so that it wouldn’t apply to Putin’s term which is to end in 2024.
