The UNDP recently released the first edition of Gender Social Norms Index. It revealed that 90% of people are biased against women.
The Index
The Gender Social Norms Index was released by the United Nations Development Program. It measure the obstructive effects of social belief on gender parity in areas of politics, education and work. It is based on data from 75 countries and covers about 80% of the global population.
Highlights of the Report
Some of the key highlights of the report:
- Nearly 90% of the people, both men and women, are biased against women.
- Nearly 50% believe that men make better political leaders.
- Over 40% believe that men are better at being business executives.
- 28% think that a man beating his wife is justified.
Beijing+25
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is a blueprint for advancement of women’s rights. 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the declaration (Beijing+25). The declaration was adopted by the United Nations in 1995 during the 4th World Conference on Women.
