Nari Shakti Puraskar
On International Women’s Day, the President gave away the Nari Shakti Puraskar to 15 women, the oldest of whom is 105 years old.
About the Award
The Nari Shakti Award is the highest civilian award in the country awarded to women in recognition of their contributions and achievements. It was instituted in 1999 and is conferred on the International Women’s Day (March 8th). It carries a citation and a cash prize of 1 lakh INR.
Categories of the Award
The award is conferred under 6 categories:
- Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Award for Best Private Sector organization/ Public sector undertaking in promoting the well-being and welfare of women
- Kannagi Devi Award for Best State which has appreciably improved Child Sex Ratio
- Mata Jijabai Award for Best Urban Local body for providing services and facilities to women
- Rani Gaidinliu Zeliang Award for Best Civil Society organization (CSO) doing outstanding work for the welfare and well-being of women
- Rani Lakshmi Bai Award for Best Institution for Research & Development in the field of women empowerment
- Rani Rudramma Devi Awards for two District Panchayats and two Gram Panchayats
Awardees
The awardees of Nari Shakti Puraskar 2019 include Bhageerathi Amma and Karthyayini Amma for their achievements in literacy equivalent learning, Mann Kaur for her athletic achievements, Arifa Jan for her role in reviving handicrafts, mountaineers Tashi and Nungshi, Mohana Jitarwal, Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawana Kanth for becoming the first women fighter pilots in India, etc.
