Asansol Junction Railway Station
The first ever ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ was launched by the Indian Railways at the Asansol Junction Railway Station, along with other amenities for passengers.
- Location:
Asansol is located in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Asansol Junction Railway Station is a part of the Eastern Railway Zone. It is situated en route to Delhi from Howrah (on the Delhi-Howrah main line).
- Restaurant on Wheels:
India’s first ever ‘restaurant on wheels’ was launched at Asansol Station. It is for use by the railway passengers and also the general public. The launch is expected to earn non-fare revenues worth 50 lakh INR over the next 5 years.
- MEMU Coach:
The ‘restaurant on wheels’ was created by refurbishing old MEMU coaches. MEMU or Mainline Electric Multiple Units are trains that run for short and medium distance transports in India. MEMUs are manufactured at Kapurthala and Chennai. Other introductions at the Asansol Station are air conditioned retiring rooms, battery operated car and Electronic Reservation Chart Display System.
