USA’s Denaturalisation Section

US Department of Justice has created a dedicated division to deal with denaturalisation. This is in light of increasing number of denaturalisation cases under Trump’s presidency.

1) What is denaturalisation?

Denaturalisation is the process of revoking the citizenship of a person who was not born in the country. The US department of justice recently created the Denaturalisation Section to deal with such cases. The number of denaturalisation cases has increased under the Trump presidency. This is being viewed as the latest effort to ‘fix the US immigration system’.

  2) Who are to be denaturalised in USA?

The US department of justice said that the division is to investigate and argue denaturalisation cases. It will target persons who had committed terrorism, war criminals, sex offenders, other fraudsters etc. Critics have raised concerns about the broad definition of fraud.

3) Is denaturalisation applicable for crimes committed after obtaining citizenship?

The denaturalisation is not applicable for crimes that are committed post-citizenship in USA. The section was created due to increasing referrals from law enforcement agencies in the country for denaturalisation.
