‘Barrier-Free Tourism Project’ of Kerala honoured by UNWTO

The Barrier-Free Tourism Project implemented by Kerala Tourism Department in Thrissur district has received the special mention honour as “Emerging Global Destination” in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Accessible Destination Awards 2019.  The tourism director of Kerala, P Bala Kiran received the conferment during the awards ceremony conducted in the capital city of Spain, Madrid from Zurab Pololokashvili (Secretary-General UNWTO).

Earlier in March 2019, the Kerala Tourism has launched the barrier-free project to make 120 destinations in Kerala disabled-friendly. 80 such projects have been implemented and 8 of them are in the city of Thrissur. Kerala is the first state in India to work as per the guidelines issued by UNWTO on making the destinations disabled friendly, which will also help in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The tourism director of Kerala informed that the state tourism department is committed to achieving its target of making all tourists destinations in the state tourism-friendly before 2021.
