UNSC holds closed-door meeting on Kashmir following China’s Request
China continues its efforts of highlighting Pakistani propaganda over India’s Jammu and Kashmir at the global stage which once again received a stinging response from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members on Wednesday, 15th January 2020. India revoked the special status of its state Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 followed by which Pakistan called for a UNSC meeting which out of the five UNSC permanent members-only China responded, again in December 2019 China requested for a private discussion in UNSC which was turned down by the other members.
On Wednesday, as the UNSC members met for a closed-door meeting to discuss an issue related to a country in the African continent, China requested under the agenda of UNSC ‘Any Other Business Point’ to discuss the ground situation in Kashmir. However, China’s request was thwarted by the 15 member council and said that the dispute related to Jammu and Kashmir region is bilateral, and should be resolved by India and Pakistan.
