Home Minister Chairs the sixth meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA)
For reviewing the progress made towards the program ‘Holistic Development of Islands’, the Island Development Agency on Monday, 13th January 2020 conducted its sixth meeting under the chairmanship of the Union Home Minister of India, Amit Shah. The meeting was conducted with focus on creating sustainable development in identified five islands of the Lakshadweep and four of the Andaman and Nicobar by creating job for the islanders through exports(seafood and coconut-based products) and promoting tourism in Phase I. For Phase II, 12 islands from the Andaman and Nicobar and 5 from the Lakshadweep will be covered. Apart from them, progress on implemented projects for strengthening infrastructure support by improving digital connectivity, sea, and air route was reviewed. By June 2020, 8 islands of Andaman and Nicobar including the capital Port Blair will be digitally connected through submarine optical fiber cable. At the progress made to date, after review, the Minister expressed his satisfaction and for islanders benefits called upon all stakeholders to expedite the implementation work on-going projects.
