World Malaria Report 2019
A specialized agency of the United Nations, the World Health Organization(WHO) released its World Malaria Report 2019 on Wednesday, 4th December 2019.
The report provides an all-inclusive update on regional and global malaria data and trends. The 2019 report was prepared on the basis of information received from areas with ongoing malaria transmission and over 80 countries.
World Malaria Day is observed every year on the 25th of April.
Highlights from the report:
In 2018, an estimate of 228 million cases of malaria has occurred worldwide as compared to an estimated 231 million cases in 2017. Malaria cases in India dropped by 28 percent in 2018 as compared to 2017. An estimate of 6,737,000 malaria cases was reported in India in which 9,620 peoples lost their lives in 2018.
More than half of all malaria cases worldwide have been reported from six countries: Nigeria(25%), DR Congo (12%), Uganda (5%) and Niger, Cote d’Ivoire and Mozambique (4% each)
Nineteen countries from the sub-Saharan region of Africa and India have reported almost 85% of the total cases occurred worldwide.
The incidence rate of malaria has declined from 71 to 57 cases per 1000 population at risk from 2014 to 2018.
In the southeast Asia region, the incidence rate of malaria was 5 cases per 1000 population at risk in 2018.
Between 2015-2018, 31 countries around the world where malaria is still endemic.
