Update : National Register for Transport

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin J Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the revenue collected by the Union Government by providing access to VAHAN and SARATHI database to various private and government entities is Rs 65 crore.
A Centralized National Registry for transport is maintained by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through National Informatics Centre (NIC) comprises approximately 25 crore vehicle registration records and approximately 15 crore driving license records.
The Government currently provides access to 32 Government entities and 87 private entities who can obtain data under the provided Bulk Data Sharing Policy & Procedure with an amount of Rs. three crore for the FY 2019-20.
For educational institutions, this data can be obtained for research & academic purposes or for internal use only on payment of an amount of Rs. five lakh only for the FY 2019-20.
The Union Government has also linked VAHAN and SARATHI with stolen vehicles data from the National Crime Record Bureau to solve cases faster and in a more approachable manner.

What is VAHAN?

The VAHAN is a comprehensive system that takes care of all the burdensome activities of Vehicle Registration, leaving the Transport Department to deal with more important business issues. The software enables the processes at RTO/DTO/MLO/SDM involving Vehicle Registration, Fitness, Taxes, Permits & Enforcement to get computerized.

What is SARATHI?

The SARATHI is the database system for Driving Licenses and it aims for the compilation of data of driving Licenses of all the states in State Register and National Register.
