Amitav Ghosh conferred Jnanpith Award
Noted English writer Amitav Ghosh was conferred with the 54th Jnanpith award for the year 2018.
Jnanpith Award
Jnanpith Award was instituted in 1961 by the Bhartiya Jnanpith to honour Indian litterateurs who write in English or any one of the 22 Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Malayalam writer G.S. Kurup was the first recipient of the award.
Bharatiya Jnanpith founded on February 18, 1944, is a literary and research organization, based in New Delhi, India. It was founded by Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and his wife Rama Jain to undertake systematic research and publication of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali and Apabhramsha texts and covering subjects like religion, philosophy, logic, ethics, grammar, astrology, poetics.
