How the INS Vela can add to Indian Naval capabilities?
The Indian Navy has launched the fourth Stealth Scorpene-Class submarine INS Vela. It was the fourth submarine that was launched by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited after it entered into contract with French collaborator Ms Naval Group (earlier known as DCNS) for construction and transfer of technology for six Scorpene class submarines under Project 75.
How it will add to Indian Naval Capabilities?
- It can attack using torpedoes and tube launch anti-ship missiles, whilst on surface or underwater.
- It has superior stealth which gives it invulnerability and makes more difficult for enemy to detect it.
- It can undertake missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, area surveillance, intelligence gathering, mine laying etc. and has ability to launch crippling attack on enemy using precision guided weapon.
- It can operate in all theatres, including tropics.
About Project 75
Under Project 75, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will manufacture six Scorpene class submarines which are next generation diesel submarines for Indian Navy under through technology transfer from Naval Group of France. The six scorpene submarines under the project are:
- INS Kalvari
- INS Khanderi
- INS Karanj
- INS Vela
- INS Vagir
- INS Vagsheer
Recently Indian Navy launched the Scorpene-class submarine Vela, the fourth of six underwater warships.
