March 23: Shaheed Diwas

Every year, March 23rd is celebrated as Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day. The Day is observed to commemorate the courage and heroism of three great young leaders Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru.

Highlights

The Day is also celebrated as Martyr’s Day in the country. Several Schools and Colleges pay tribute and express their gratitude on this day.

Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was born in 1907. He popularised the phase “Inquilab Zindabad”. This means Long Live Revolution.

Other Martyr’s Day Observed in India

On January 30, India observes Martyrs Day to mark the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. On May 19, Language Martyr’s Day is marked in the memory of 15 Bengalis who sacrificed their lives in Bengali Language Movement

On October 21, Police Martyr Day is marked. It is also called Police Martyr’s Day. On October 21, the CRPF at the Indo-Tibetan Border were ambushed by the Chinese forces.

On November 17, Odisha Government marks Martyr’s Day to commemorate the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai.

On November 19, Maharashtra observes Martyr’s Day to celebrate the birth anniversary of Rani Lakshmi Bhai.
