Fourth Anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission celebrated
The Fourth Anniversary of Shyama Mukherji Rurban Mission is being celebrated all over India on February 21, 2020. It was launched on February 21, 2016. The mission aims at stimulating local economic development and create well planned Rurban Regions
Highlights
The mission aims to develop 300 Rurban clusters. The Niti Aayog has proposed that these clusters are to be extended to 1000 in 3 years.
The Mission
The mission aims to preserve the essence of rural community life. It was announced in the Union Budget 2014-15. The Budget allocated Rs 5,142 crores of rupees for the scheme. As 69% of rural population lives in the rural areas, the mission aims on the availability of amenities to the rural population.
The Plan
The Mission plans to develop Rurban clusters contiguously with the Gram Panchayats with a population of 25,000 to 50,000 in plains and 5,000 to 15,000 in desert and hilly areas.
Around 100 clusters were to developed in the first year. It is a joint venture with the state governments where the state governments had to identify the clusters. Therefore, the progress of the mission is slow.
