Election Commission launches PPRTMS-an online system
On January 1, 2020, the Election Commission of India launched an online system that will allow political parties to track their applications. The system is called Political Parties Registration Tracking Management System (PPRTMS).
Highlights
The system will track applications registered by political parties. The status of the application shall be obtained through SMS or e-mail. The system works on a real time basis.
For a political party to contest in election, it has to submit an application to the election commission. The commission checks if the party satisfies the criteria governed by section 29A of Representation of People Act, 1951.
Section 29A of RP act, 1951
Under the section, a party has to submit an application to the election commission within 30 days of its formation. Under the act, a party is eligible to get registered as “National Political Party of India” only if it satisfies following criteria
- The party should secure at least 6% of votes in four or more states at an election to assembly or parliament
- Also, the party should win at least four seats in House of People
A party is eligible to get registered as “State Political Party” if it satisfies the following criteria
- The party should win 6% of votes polled in state elections
- It should win at least 2 seats in legislative assembly of the state.
