Plan to build new Parliament Building

On December 21, 2019, GoI announced that the 9.5-acre plot opposite to Parliament building is to be used for the construction of new Parliament building. This officially confirms that the plan to build a new Parliamentary building is on. There were concerns and objections regarding the plan in the earlier stages.

The Government of India is planning to build a new Parliament House. Under the plan, a new Central Secretariat will be built for all ministries that are spread over many buildings across Delhi.

Highlights

In September 2019, the Central Public Works Department set massive project by issuing request for redevelopment of parliamentary building and for the development of new secretariat. The project will cost Rs 12,450 crores. The deadline of the project completion is fixed as March 2022 (75th year of Independence). The new building will have lifespan of 150 to 200 years.

Background

The Parliament House was built by the British between 1911 and 1931. After 1947, government of independent India added buildings like Krishi Bhavan, Shastri Bhavan and Nirman Bhavan. These buildings are not earth quake proof and do have modern facilities and space that are in need today.

History

The Parliament Architecture was designed by British Architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker in 1912. The structure includes hybrid architectural style namely Hindu, Roman and Saracenic.
