President’s Colour awarded to Indian Naval Academy

President Ram Nath Kovind and Supreme Commander of Indian Armed Forces, awarded President’s Colour to Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala at Kochi, Kerala. The President’s Colour is the highest honour bestowed upon a military unit. It was awarded to INA in recognition of the yeoman service rendered by the institution in training and shaping Indian Naval officers over the last 50 years at three different locations – Goa, Kochi and Ezhimala. To commemorate this occasion, a special postal cover was also released by the President.

Important Facts

Indian Navy was the first of the three armed forces (others being Army and Air Force) to be awarded the President’s Colour on 27 May 1951 by then President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Besides INA, Southern Naval Command, Eastern Naval Command, Western Naval Command, Western & Eastern Fleet as well as Submarine Arm are others units of Indian Navy to be awarded similarly.

About Indian Naval Academy

It was first established at a temporary location at Kochi, Kerala in 1969. With the increase in strength of the trainees, it was relocated to INS Mandovi at Goa in 1986. Later INA found its permanent home at Ezhimala, Kerala and was inaugurated on 8 January 2009.

Over a period of 10 years, INA, Ezhimala has commissioned 5930 officers into Indian Navy and Coast Guard including 531 women officers. It has present strength of 963 trainees including 44 women trainees and 26 trainees from friendly foreign countries.
