Zangmu dam

Zangmu dam is a proposed dam undergoing construction by China on Brahmaputra River northwest of Gyaca in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is part of the Zangmu Hydropower Project and will support a 510 MW power station worth $1.2-billion for Tibet region of China. Construction began in 2009 and is expected to be complete in 2015. In the recent five-year plans for 2011-2015, China has clearly signalled the construction of the dam as priority strategic projects.

As the Brahmaputra River flows into India and Bangladesh, it has become a matter of controversy between India and China but China denies the claims on reasons that his project will not impact the flow of water to downstream countries like India and Bangladesh. While the run of the river Zangmu dam is meant to deal with shortage of power in Tibet, China is said to be also considering diverting the waters in the upper reaches towards Xinjiang which is not acceptable from Indian point of view.
