Robert O’Brien named National Security Advisor of US

US President Donald Trump has named Robert O’Brien as the new National Security Advisor (NSA) of the US. He will replace John Bolton who was sacked by President Trump over differences on multiple issues especially in approach towards Iran and Venezuela.

Robert O’Brien has been present in the US foreign policy arena of the Republican Party for long.

O’Brien has held a number of State Department positions. In 2005 he was appointed as the US representative to the UN General Assembly. Under Trump administration, he is holding the position of the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs at the State Department.

Functions of US National Security Advisor

The National Security Advisor is the chief in-house and reports directly to the president. The National Security Advisor advice president on key national security issues and offers the president a range of options on national security issues.

The National Security advisor prepares the president for NSC meetings, helps draft national security and foreign policy speeches, helps to prepare for meetings with congressional leaders, responds to presidential requests for information, and briefs the president on issues of the moment.

The US National Security Advisor participates in meetings of the U.S. National Security Council (NSC) and chairs meetings of the council’s Principals Committee alongside secretary of state and secretary of defense when the president is not in attendance.
