Do you think that the recent tensions between India and US are fuelled by Indian policy of multi-alignment and national-populism in both the countries?
The reasons of contention between India US are becoming more transparent and prominent the first time in history. It is being realised that these tensions have resulted from the multi-alignment of New Delhi and also the rise in national populism in both countries.
The US State Departments report titled Freedom of Religion has accused India of not treating the minorities justly. The latest report has highlighted the role of various vigilante groups in the incidents of mob lynchings. It has highlighted the role of RSS and VHP in the alienation of non-Hindus and other lower-caste Hindus. This also found mention in the Pompeo speech at one occasion while on his visit to India where he stated that both India and America stand for religious freedom, rule of law and civil society.
Pompeo also stressed on the growing trade tensions which are on the rise between the two nations. Trump has announced the failure of India to address US concerns about the failure of India for allowing reasonable and equitable access to markets. The new e-commerce rules presented by India had largely affected the foreign traders and big US online majors. It was on May 31, that US terminated the Indian designation of a beneficiary developing country of the Generalised System of Preferences. This was retaliated by India by a tariff on 29 American goods.
Also, there is increased resistance on the Indian H1B visas which were granted by the US every year.
The Indian policy of multi-alignment in this highly polarised world is very hard to sustain and accepted by others. India proceeded with S-400 deal with Russia despite US warnings. Also, it has become difficult for India to remain a friend of US and Iran at the same time.
