There is a nuanced relationship between the News Ombudsman and the News Editor and an external ombudsman cannot balance it. Comment.
It is clear that an external ombudsman will not serve as an effective authority especially when there is an apparent polarisation of news. News ombudsman is required to be inherently liberal and carry no biases towards conservative views. These individuals have open access to the entire news-gathering process. After a story gets published, the ombudsman is required to discuss the reasons behind publishing that story with the Editor. Thus, the ombudsman, the editor and the reporters all abide by the same ethical blueprint which defines journalism. This makes it important to have an internal person with the requisite experience as an ombudsman. Latter has to allow information flow and not come in the way of diverse and contrarian opinions.
