Non-political appointments, security of tenure and rigorous procedure for removal are some of the measures which were needed to strengthen the institution of judiciary. Comment.
Independent means someone or something which is not dependent on or controlled by others. Independence is thus highly important for a functional judicial system. It is the basic functions and decisions of every judge which must be free of every bias and independent of any external consideration. There are many measures, systems and procedures which come to secure the independence of the judges and the judiciary like non-political appointments, the security of tenure, the procedure for removal, etc. Any institution which is strengthened from inside works best as it touches the core of the institution. Also, such independence is not a one-time affair but has to be sustainable. Another important step will be to foster the leadership structure at all levels. Judiciary also needs to secure its independence in terms of financial matters.
