Bill to promote Mahatma Gandhi’s Legacy introduced in the US House of Representatives

American politician serving his record 17th term in the US lower house of Parliament and a legendary civil rights leader, John Lewis on Friday, 20th December 2019 has introduced a House Bill (HR 5517) in the lower of the United States of America’s Parliament, the house of representatives.
The bill seeks to promote the legacy of India’s first mass leader, Mahatma Gandhi and the 1955 American Civil Rights Movement leader, Martin Luther King Jr. The bill was introduced to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, will honour the contributions and legacies of both the leaders. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolence approach to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent activism.
Highlights from the Bill:
The bill sought USD 150 million budgetary allocations in the next five years for the promotion of the legacies of the leaders, a separate USD 30 million annually for the next five years proposed for setting up of a Gandhi-King Development Foundation. The proposed Foundation under the bill to be created under Indian Laws by the United States Agency for International Development(USAID), an allocation of USD 2 million annually till 2025 for establishing Gandhi-King Scholarly Exchange Initiative, and establishing a Gandhi-King Global Academy that will offer professional training and development on issues related for resolution of global conflicts.
