Jamnagar Refinery to produce only Jet Fuel and Petrochemicals

In light of the growing uncertainty over the future of gasoline-powered cars, one of the world’s largest oil refineries and India’s largest oil refinery, the Reliance Industries owned Jamnagar Refinery has decided to eliminate most of liquid fuels portfolio to produce only a specific variety of high-end fuels.

What has happened?

• The RIL-board is concerned about the increase of electric vehicles on Indian roads in the future.
• The rise in electric vehicles would mean that the market for gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles will shrink in the future.
• The Jamnagar refinery, which is the world’s largest fuel processing complex located in single locations needs to be made a future proof.
• Raw Crude can be refined into any number of products ranging from asphalt, petrol, diesel, kerosene, liquified petroleum gas and other derivatives by a process known as fractional distillation.
• It is relatively expensive to upgrade a refinery to produce only high-end petroleum products, hence the company is interested to invest in the future at a relatively earlier date.

Where is the Jamnagar refinery located?

• The Jamnagar Refinery is a privately owned and operated crude oil refinery located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. It is owned by the Mukesh Ambani led- Reliance Industries Limited.
• The Jamnagar refinery was commissioned on 14 July 1999.

It initially had an installed capacity of 668000 barrels per day. However, it was later increased to 1240000 barrels per day. This is the world’s largest aggregate oil refining capacity located in one?location in the world.
