Indian-American scientist Arun Majumdar appointed as US Science Envoy
Arun Majumdar, a top Indian-American scientist from Stanford University has been appointed as one of the Science Envoys of the United States (US). Arun along with other three scientists Peter Hotez, Jane Lubchenco and Geri Richmond will serve as U.S. Envoys from January 2015.
Science Envoys travel as private citizens and advice the White House, the Department of State, and the scientific community about potential opportunities for cooperation.
Work: These distinguished scientists as Science Envoys will work internationally at the citizen and government levels to develop partnerships, improve collaboration and forge mutually beneficial relationships between other nations and the US to stimulate increased scientific cooperation and foster economic prosperity.
About Arun Majumdar
- Arun Majumdar is a material scientist, engineer and is an IIT-Bombay alumnus.
- He is a leading scientist in the fields of thermoelectric materials, heat and mass transfer, thermal management, and waste heat recovery. He has published several hundred papers, patents, and conference proceedings, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
- He was President Barack Obama’s nominee for the Under Secretary of Energy between November 2011 and May 2012. But his nomination was withdrawn by the White House.
- Presently, he is professor at Stanford University, where he serves on the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is a Senior Fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy.
- He formerly ran the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
- He was also the deputy director of LBNL as well as a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
