World Justice Projects Rule of Law Index
The World Justice Project (WJP) is an independent, multidisciplinary organization working to advance the rule of law worldwide. The World Justice Project has released its Rule of Law Index 2017-18 report. The index measures rule of law adherence in 113 countries worldwide based on household and expert surveys.
Rule of Law Index measures countries’ rule of law performance across eight factors
- Constraints on Government Powers.
- Absence of Corruption.
- Open Government
- Fundamental Rights.
- Order and Security.
- Regulatory Enforcement.
- Civil Justice.
- Criminal Justice.
The findings of the report include:
- 71 out of the 113 countries have witnessed a drop in the score.
- Top three overall performers were Denmark, Norway and Finland.
- Bottom three overall performers Afghanistan, Cambodia and Venezuela.
- Nepal at 58th position leads the Index in South Asia.
- India’s rank was 62, better than its neighbours China, Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Effective rule of law reduces corruption, combats poverty and disease, and protects people from injustices large and small. The countries need to take effective steps to address the concerns raised in the report for the establishment of Just society. [Reference]
