The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on December 3 to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities since 1992. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities inevery aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The 2016 theme is “Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want”. This theme notes the recent adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of these goals in building a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities. It has been celebrated with varying degrees of success around the planet.
