Statue of Liberty completes 125 yrs
- The Statue of Liberty is located on the Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and recently it completed 125 years of dedication.
- The statue was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and was gifted to the United States from the people of France. The female figure represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
- A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue has become an icon of freedom and of the United States.
- Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, was conceived to symbolize the friendship between the two countries and a shared love of liberty. President Glover Cleveland dedicated the statue on Oct 28, 1886.
