Jammu & Kashmir : India’s longest railway tunnel completed
11-km long tunnel through the Pir Panjal range was on Friday formally completed, removing the last hurdle to connect Kashmir to India’s vast railway grid for the first time and making train journey possible all the way to Srinagar. Built over seven years at 7,000 feet, it is India’s longest railway tunnel and the second longest in Asia. It is part of the Udhampur-Baramulla railway project. The tunnel, aligned straight from north to south, is100% waterproof & equipped with a modern firefighting system. Trains will take 6.6 minutes to travel from Banihal to Qazigund via the tunnel.
