India recognizes post-Gaddafi regime & Palestine’s membership in UN

  • Recently, the Government of India has announced its support for Libyan rebels-led Transitional National Council (TNC) in the UN, led by its President Mustafa Abdel Jalil, to attend the forthcoming UNGA session in New York.
  • India also recently participated as an observer in the Libyan Contact Group meeting in Istanbul in July and at the minister of state level at the Paris conference on Libya, jointly organized by France and the United Kingdom on September 1.
  • India’s charge d’affaires to Libya, currently based in Tunis, has formally established contact with the TNC mission in Tunis.
  • India has also given humanitarian assistance of $1 million through UN-OCHA ((Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs)) to Libya and assistance of another $2 million is being processed.
  • UN General Assembly voted to provide Libya’s seat in the Assembly to the nation’s rebel NTC (National Transitional Council) which had tumbled Muammar Gaddafi
  • The 193-member assembly voted 114 in favour and 17 against NTC. 15 abstentions were there.
  • India also has expressed support to Palestine’s membership as a state in the UN. It’s worth note that India had recognized the state of Palestine in November 1988.
  • Palestine is seeking to become the 194th member of the UN and a request to that effect from its President Mahmoud Abbas is likely to be taken up at the General Assembly.
