7th March Speech of Bangabandhu
Bangladesh observed the anniversary of the historic 7th March Speech of its founding President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1971.
About the Speech
The historic speech was delivered by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 7th March 1971 at the Ramna Race Course in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The speech was a de facto declaration of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan and led to the Bangladesh Liberation War several days later.
Operation Searchlight
Operation Searchlight was launched by West Pakistan military to curb the Bengali resistance and civil disobedience movement in the erstwhile East Pakistan. It was launched after the 7th March Speech at Dhaka. It targeted the Bengali civilians including students and politicians and also the intelligentsia and armed personnel.
Documentary Heritage
The 7th March Speech of Mujibur Rahman was declared a documentary heritage under the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO on October 30th, 2017. The Memory of the World Register is a compendium of world’s documentary heritage including manuscripts, audio-visual materials, oral traditions, archive holdings, libraries, etc.
