7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting

On 24th May 2022 China hosted the 7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting.

What are the highlights of the meeting?

From India, Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi participated in the meeting virtually with participation from all BRICS countries. The theme was “Establishing a Cultural Partnership Featuring Inclusiveness and Mutual Learning among BRICS”. The members held discussions regarding the advancement of cultural activities amongst BRICS member nations.  The focus areas of discussion were promoting the cooperation on cultural digitalization, strengthening cooperation on cultural heritage protection, and encouraging the cultural exchange platforms of BRICS member countries.  At the end of the meeting, the members adopted the BRICS Action Plan 2022-2026 to strengthen the cultural cooperation and implement the BRICS Cultural Cooperation Agreement, which was signed in 2015.

What are the highlights of the Minister’s speech?

The Minister presented India’s perspective and said India prioritizes digitization of collections in the field of cultural heritage and presenting them publicly to ensure their long-term storage. The minister also said that through virtual exhibitions of the BRICS Countries, their rich cultural heritage can be explored. She said that India believes in cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. She also asserted that India strongly advocates integrating cultural heritage and traditional knowledge into innovative solutions to environmental concerns.
