50th anniversary of 1965 Indo-Pak war observed
50th anniversary of 1965 India-Pakistan war was observed across the country on 28 August 2015.
President Pranab Mukherjee paid rich tributes to the war martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti, New Delhi. Army Chief, General Dalbir Singh, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan also paid their tributes to the martyrs.
Significance: 28 August marks the victory day of Indian forces in the battle against Pakistan in the strategic Haji Pir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) which took place in 1965.
About 1965 India-Pakistan war
- The war was started following Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into J&K to precipitate an insurgency against India.
- India forces under the dynamic leadership of then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri retaliated Pakistan’s infiltration by launching a full-scale military attack on West Pakistan. This war had witnessed the largest tank battle since World War II.
- The 17 day war ended after a ceasefire was declared following diplomatic intervention by the then Soviet Union (USSR) and US and the subsequent issuance of the Tashkent Declaration.
