38th India Carpet Expo, Varanasi
The CEPC – Carpet Export Promotion Council is organizing 38th India Carpet Expo between October 11 and October 14, 2019. The aim of the expo is to promote cultural heritage and weaving skills of hand made Indian carpets. It acts as a platform for international carpet buyers, architects, exporters to meet and establish business relationship. It is organized twice in a year, once in Delhi and once in Varanasi.
Highlights of the Expo
- It is one of the largest handmade carpet fairs in Asia.
- The unique capability of the fair is that it adapts any type of design, quality, color and size according to the specifications of the carpet buyers
- The carpet industry has immense potential for growth in terms of production and exports.
Carpet producing belt
The major carpet producing centers in India are located in UP, J&K, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, North East Regions, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Telangana and Chattisgarh.
Carpet Exports
The carpet producing belt exported around 1,765 million USD worth carpets in 2018 – 19 financial year. They are exporting carpets to more than 70 countries in the world. The major carpet importees from India are USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Italy, Brazil.
Significance of the expo
Germany and other European countries were the traditional importers of Indian carpets. However, these markets are now completely developed and are saturated. Hence, the Carpet Export Promotion Council is now focusing on Latin American countries, New Zealand and Australia.
There is also a huge scope of investment in floor coverings apart from carpets in the industry. Over 20 lakh workers and artisans are involved in the business. Predominantly rural women are directly and indirectly are employed in the industry. Most of the carpet workers are from weaker section of the society and the trade provides extra occupation to them at their homes.
