2nd phase of LOTUS-HR launched in New Delhi
The second phase of an Indo-Dutch project called Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse, or LOTUS-HR was launched at Barapullah drain in New Delhi by Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan and the Dutch Royal couple, Netherlands King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.
The Dutch Royal couple is on a five-day visit to India at the invitation of President Ram Nath Kovind. This trip will be King Willem-Alexander’s first state visit to India following his ascension to the throne in 2013. The visit is expected to boost political and economic cooperation between two countries.
About LOTUS-HR
It is a water treatment laboratory that seeks to treat dirty water of Barapullah Drain before it deposits into Yamuna. The project was set up in 2017 at the Sun Dial Park in New Delhi as part of collaboration between governments of India and Netherlands. Upon commissioning, this innovative pilot scale modular plant will treat 10,000 litre sewage water per day and will also showcase a self-sustaining model for end user.
Objective: To demonstrate a holistic waste-water management approach that will produce clean water which can further be reused for various purposes.
Bodies Involved: It is jointly supported by Department of Biotechnology, under Union Ministry of Science and Technology and Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. Moreover, IIT-Delhi and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) are partners in this project.
Technology being used in LOTUS-HR is called wetland technique.
