26th edition of Women and Men in India 2024

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) of India has released its 26th edition of Women and Men in India 2024 – Selected Indicators and Data. This publication provides an extensive overview of gender-related indicators across various sectors in India, showcasing the progress and challenges in gender equality.

Gender Disparities in Financial Inclusion

Women own 39.2% of all bank accounts in India. In rural areas, this figure rises to 42.2%. Women contribute to 39.7% of total bank deposits. The increase in female participation in financial systems indicates growing economic empowerment.

Stock Market Participation

The number of DEMAT accounts has surged from 33.26 million in March 2021 to 143.02 million by November 2024. This represents a fourfold increase. Female accounts grew from 6.67 million to 27.71 million during the same period.

Female Entrepreneurship Growth

There is a notable rise in female-headed proprietary establishments in sectors like manufacturing and services. The number of startups with at least one woman director increased from 1,943 in 2017 to 17,405 in 2024. This trend reflects a positive shift towards female entrepreneurship.

Political Participation and Voter Turnout

The total number of electors in India has increased dramatically from 173.2 million in 1952 to 978 million in 2024. Female voter turnout reached 65.8% in 2024, slightly down from 67.2% in 2019. However, women outperformed men in voter turnout in the 2024 elections, indicating a narrowing gender gap.

Education and Gender Parity

The Gender Parity Index (GPI) for primary and higher secondary education remains high, indicating robust female enrolment. Although fluctuations occurred at the upper primary and elementary levels, gender parity has largely been maintained.

Labour Force Participation Rate

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above rose from 49.8% in 2017-18 to 60.1% in 2023-24. This increase marks improved workforce participation among women, contributing to economic growth.

The report puts stress on both advancements and ongoing challenges in gender equality. It serves as a vital resource for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to create gender-sensitive policies. Continued efforts are necessary to address disparities and enhance women’s roles in society.
