23 July: National Broadcasting Day
National broadcasting Day is observed every year on 23 July across India. It is on 23 July in 1927, the 1st ever radio broadcast in country went on the air from Bombay Station under a private company called the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC). Thereby since 1927 radio has been an important part in people’s life in India.
Key Highlights
Background: First broadcasting in India began in July 1923 with programmes by Radio Club of Mumbai. Then according to an agreement of 23 July 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) started organised radio broadcasting from Bombay station and eventually later on 8 June 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service became All India Radio (AIR).
All India Radio: Since it’s inception, it has been serving to inform, educate and entertain masses and truly living up to its motto – Bahujan Hitaya Bahujan Sukhaya
Radio is only tool that has become a medium of entertainment along with news everywhere in India.
AIR Reach: India is the most diverse nation in World and All India Radio has 414 stations in 23 languages and broadcasts in 179 dialects thus making it one of the largest public broadcasting organisations in the world.
Way Ahead
On occasion of National Broadcasting day Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar highlighted that NDA government is working towards replacing one station by a four new stations and that via new technology the All India Radio service will reach more people through Medium wave (MW) and Frequency modulation (FM).
