2023 World Malaria Report
In the recently published 2023 World Malaria Report by the World Health Organization (WHO), it was revealed that India accounted for a staggering 66% of malaria cases in the WHO South-East Asia Region in 2022. Notably, almost half of all cases in the region (46%) were attributed to Plasmodium vivax, a protozoal parasite and the primary cause of recurring malaria.
Rising Malaria Cases Despite Preventive Measures
- The report underscores the paradox that, despite efforts to expand access to insecticide-treated nets and preventive medicines for vulnerable populations, the number of malaria cases is on the rise.
- In the WHO South-East Asia Region, which constitutes approximately 2% of global malaria cases, there was a 76% decline in malaria cases from 2000 to 2022.
- However, the report notes a recent increase in cases, challenging the progress made.
Global Malaria Trends in 2022
- Globally, the report estimates 249 million malaria cases in 2022, surpassing the pre-pandemic level of 233 million in 2019 by 16 million cases.
- This surge is attributed not only to the disruptions caused by COVID-19 but also to emerging threats such as drug and insecticide resistance, humanitarian crises, resource constraints, and climate change impacts.
- The report emphasizes the critical link between climate change and the spread of malaria.
