2022 Invictus Games

On 16th April 2022, the 2022 edition of the Invictus Games opened in The Hague, Netherlands. The Games are being held from 16th to 22nd April. The Invictus Games’ first edition was held in London in the year 2014.

Overview:

  • The games have been held in Orlando, the US in 2016, Toronto, Canada in 2017, and Sydney, Australia in 2018.
  • Dusseldorf, Germany will be hosting the 2023 edition of the games.

About the games

It is an international sporting competition that is similar to the Paralympics but is meant for the injured, wounded, and sick military war veterans and service personnel. The Games has drawn inspiration from poet William Ernest Henley’s poem ‘Invictus’.

The Invictus Games were created by Harry, Duke of Sussex, after he saw the Warrior Games in the United States in 2013 and wanted to start something similar in London. The Warrior Games are organized by the US Department of Defense for the ill, wounded, and injured veterans and active-duty US military service members.

About Invictus Games Foundation

In 2014 after the inaugural event the Invictus Games Foundation was set up. It is the brand owner and the selector of the host cities of the Games. It is also tasked with setting the rules, managing the competition, categorizations, and branding.

About the 2022 edition

The Games that are currently underway at The Hague were supposed to be held in the year 2020 but they were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From 20 countries more than 500 competitors are participating in archery, athletics, indoor rowing, cycling, sitting volleyball, powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, swimming, and wheelchair rugby.
