2022 Fields Medal Winners
On July 5, 2022, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced the winners of the 2022 Fields Medals.
Key Facts
- It is the highest honour given in the field of mathematics and is awarded to people aged below 40.
- Winners were announced at an award ceremony in Helsinki.
Who are the winners?
- IMU announced four winners in total.
- Number theorist Maryna Viazovska, from Ukraine, is one of the four winners.
- Other winners include:
- James Maynard: He is a number theorist from Oxford University UK. is famous for his findings on “spacing of prime numbers”.
- June Huh: He is specialist in combinatorics from Princeton University, New Jersey. He transformed the field of geometric combinatorics.
- Hugo Duminil-Copin- He is a mathematician from France, and is an expert of probability theory.
Who is Maryna Viazovska?
- Maryna Viazovska is a number theorist.
- She is grounded at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
- She has become the second woman ever to won this award.
- Maryna is famous for her solution on sphere packing problem in eight dimensions. In such problems, one got to find arrangement of spheres which can fill the largest portion of a volume.
- In three-dimensional arrangement, spheres can be efficiently packed in pyramidical structure. But in four or more dimensions, less information is available.
- She further revealed new techniques for problem of number theory and theory of symmetries in eight dimensions.
- theorist at Princeton University in New Jersey.
Who is Hugo Duminil-Copin?
Duminil-Copin is known for finding several fundamental results on a mathematical model that reveals about loss of magnetization in iron at a certain temperature.
International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM)
The International Congress of Mathematicians is held every four years. During this event, the Fields Medals prizes are announced. 2022 congress was scheduled to start in St. Petersburg in Russia on July 6. However, it was cancelled due to Russian invasion of Ukraine. It was later scheduled to be held in Helsinki in virtual mode.
