The World Immunization Week is an initiative by WHO to create awareness about the importance of vaccination. It is observed in last week of April (the 2020 event was observed between 24th and 30th of April). It is one of the 8 global public health campaigns observed by the WHO.
Vaccines Work for All
The 2020 event was observed on theme of ‘Vaccines Work for All’. The campaign promotes the people who develop, deliver and receive vaccines as heroes engaged in protection of everybody’s health. It seeks to reduce vaccine hesitancy by demonstrating the value of vaccination.
International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife
2020 was declared as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. The WHO had designated the year in commemoration of the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. As part of the campaign, WHO highlighted the important role played by nurses and midwives in championing early vaccination.
