12 July: ‘Save Water Day’ observed by West Bengal government
On 12 July 2019, West Bengal government observed Save Water Day across the state to spread the message of water conservation. This is the 1st time the day was observed. From now onwards it will be observed in state each year to create awareness among people to check misuse of water.
About ‘Save Water Day
On occasion of day West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and eminent persons of different fields including writers, actors and directors of Bengali film and theatre industry and sports personalities, school students took part in Padayatra in Kolkata.
It was also observed in Districts and Blocks of State.
Padayatra: was undertaken in Kolkata which began from Jorashanko Thakurbari and ended at base of Gandhi Statue in city. All present took pledge for conservation of water was also taken on occasion.
On occasion of day Chief Minister urged prople to-
- Save water and save life.
- Come forward for joining such social programme
- Take precautionary measures to save natural resource as water scarcity has become a major issue in world.
Steps Taken for Water Conservation in State
Since 2011, programme of digging ponds is being undertaken throughout state for conservation of water. About 3 lakhs ponds have been dug till now to deal with water scarcity.
State has water conservation programme: Jal dharo Jal bharo (Collect water, store water). To prevent floods and provide water during the period of scarcity, many check dams have been constructed and irrigation canals have been rejuvenated.
From now on state government would observe a Student Day to disseminate message of conservoing water in every sphere of society.
