12 August: International Youth Day

The International Youth Day is observed every year across world on 12 August to bring youth issues to attention of international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

The day draws attention to given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth and also seeks to highlight role played by young women and men as essential partners in change and provide opportunity to raise awareness about challenges and problems being faced by world’s youth.

International Youth Day 2019

Theme for this year is ‘Transforming education’. It seeks to highlight efforts to make education more accessible and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves. It supports Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG) i.e. to ensure equitable quality and inclusive education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Background

International Youth Day (IYD) was proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by adopting resolution 54/120 in December 1999. It was instituted by UNGA based on the recommendation of World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth held in Lisbon (Portugal) from 8 to 12 August 1998. This day was observed for first time on 12 August, 2000.
