11th World Humanitarian Day (WHD) observed by UN on August 19 with hashtag #RealLifeHeroes

The United Nations observed the 11th year of World Humanitarian Day on August 19. As stated by the UN, this day is A global campaign that celebrates humanitarians – a “thank you” to the people who have committed their lives to help others.

What is the significance of World Humanitarian Day?

The whole world pays their tribute to the humanitarian workers, injured or lost their life in harness, and express gratitude to all aid and health workers who have been still fighting, despite the odds, to prove life-saving protection to the people.

History of World Humanitarian Day

On 19th August 2003, the bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.

In 2009, the UN General Assembly decided to observe the day as World Humanitarian Day in memory of the incident.
