10th anniversary of 2004 Tsunami disaster observed

10th anniversary of 2004 Tsunami disaster was observed by all Asian counties that were hit by 2004 ferocious disaster. To mark this day, memorial ceremonies were held for the victims of this disaster in Indonesia, India, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Indonesia- the worst affected nation by this natural disaster paid homage to the victims on Banda Aceh.
In Thailand and Sri Lanka people observed this anniversary with a series of solemn events and religious rites throughout the day.
In India, homage to the victims was paid by eastern coastal states including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT).
In this regard, floral tributes and processions were held across Tamil Nadu. While the fishermen associations and communities marked this day by not venturing into the sea.
Facts about 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake & Tsunami
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred on 26 December 2004. Its recorded magnitude was 9.1 on Richter scale with an epicentre (focus) off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
This under water earthquake had triggered a series of devastating tsunamis waves of 20-30 m height along the coasts of countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
It is considered as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history killing more than 230,000 people in fourteen countries. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country by this natural disaster, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.
The tsunami also had hit Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Maldives and later reached the east African nations’ of Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania with low disastrous impact.
At present all nations in Indian Ocean as part of their Disaster management have implemented Tsunami warning systems and emergency procedures in order to minimise casualties in the future from such uncontrolled natural disaster.
