10 November: World Science Day for Peace and Development

Ever year 10th of November is celebrated as World Science Day for Peace and Development. It was established by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2001 with the objective of highlighting important role and importance of science in society and in our daily lives as well as the need to engage wider public in debates on emerging and important contemporary issues relevant to science.

About World Science Day for Peace and Development

Objective:

• Strengthening public awareness on role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies
• Renewing national and international commitment for use of science for benefit of societies
• Promoting national as well as international solidarity for shared science between countries
• Drawing attention to challenges faced by science and raising support for scientific endeavour

Celebrations of World Science Day 2019 included-

2019 Theme: ‘Open science, leaving no one behind’. The theme focuses that open Science is not only an issue of science being open to research community, as in ‘open access’ and ‘open data’ but also refers to a science open to society.

Award-giving ceremony: of PhosAgro (Russian chemical company)/ IUPAC/ UNESCO grants in green chemistry for young scientists. This aims to support green chemistry solutions and encourage young scientists to get involved in this field. The grants programme is part of PhosAgro/IUPAC/UNESCO partnership in Green Chemistry for Life.
